What’s the gut got to do with it?

The gut is often called the second brain and it is true that it contains 100 million neurons. The gut regulates hormones and is a major factor in your immune response. But, just like the brain, if you don't treat it well, you might have issues.

Why, is the gut so important to your health and wellness?

The gut produces 95% of the feel-good hormone serotonin and when this hormone is not produced enough, you can suffer from depression and anxiety. The reverse is also true. When you change your diet, you can produce more serotonin. This change can leave you feeling euphoric throughout the day.

What does your diet have to do with it?

The gut makes you feel happy or sad depending on your diet. A diet rich in sugar will make you feel happy for a short time and then leave you feeling depressed later on. This causes a vicious cycle of sugar intake - crash - sugar intake - crash. The result is a roller coaster of emotions and an expanding waistline. A diet rich in fiber has the opposite effect and will make you feel happier thought out the day.

Your gut and your immune system.

The gut is responsible for 80% of your immune system so if it’s not working properly, your immune system won't work properly.

The gut has been shown to play a role in diseases such as Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), obesity, and more serious conditions such as cancer, heart disease, and diabetes.

What can you do?

The good news is that you can increase serotonin levels by eating foods rich in tryptophan – an amino acid that converts into serotonin in the body. You can also switch to eating a whole foods diet rich in probiotics (foods that feed good bacteria), prebiotics (foods that feed good bacteria), and fermented foods like sauerkraut, kimchi, and kefir.

Unfortunately, this is not the right solution for everyone. Depending on your allergies, current hormone levels, and other key indicators in your blood panel, you may react negatively to these changes in diet.

The reason there is no silver bullet to dieting, and the reason your other diets have failed is... You've probably never started your diets by evaluating your current condition.

That's why Doctor Supported Weight Loss is so successful. The first step in losing weight is to determine why. Why are you overweight? Why have other diets not worked? And, what makes your body unique.

It starts with a survey, then an evaluation by our Dr. Rainey. After the evaluation, you get a full panel of blood work, and together we determine the best plan of action for your weight loss journey.

Holiday weight gain is a daunting thought for many people. From work parties to family gatherings, temptation is everywhere. It is easy to slip into old habits and put goals on the back burner. Many weight loss programs advertise rapid weight loss, but how do you know what's safe and what's not? Rapid weight loss could be detrimental to your health or counterproductive to your weight loss goals. There are many reasons you shouldn't try to shed pounds too quickly. When you lose weight too fast, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies and weight gain later on. Additionally, your body will start to store fat at an accelerated rate in response to the sudden drop in calories. That means that when you stop dieting, the pounds will return even faster than they went away! Being under the supervision of a trained weight loss doctor can ensure that you're losing at a healthy rate and being monitored during your weight loss journey every step of the way.

If you have arthritis, you may be concerned about your weight. Many people believe they can't lose weight if they have arthritis. This is not true! Arthritis inhibits some people from exercising due to pain and stiffness. Weight loss actually helps to reduce arthritis symptoms because as you lose weight, less strain is being put on your joints. Diet also plays a part. It's important to eat an anti-inflammatory diet to elevate discomfort associated with arthritis.

If you've been working out for several weeks and you're not losing weight, it's possible that you're gaining muscle instead of fat. When your body needs more calories than your diet provides, it turns to your fat stores for energy. The more energy your body needs to draw from the fat stores, the more weight you lose.
