The new year is just around the corner, and you know what that means… New Year’s resolutions.
Most people set intentions for the new year, and, most times, those intentions are health related. Whether your goal is to go to the gym more often or to start a new diet, healthy lifestyle resolutions are a great way to go.
The new year is a great time to work on your goals. Unfortunately for some, it can be difficult to stay consistent with resolutions. How can you ensure that you are setting realistic and attainable goals?
1. Be specific
Be very specific about what you desire. For example, instead of saying “I want to lose weight”, say “I will stick to a calorie deficit diet for two months” or “I will walk two miles every day”. Being specific about your goals will help you put them into reality. There are many ways to lose weight, so it is important to specify how you will make that happen.
2. Start small
If you are setting unrealistic goals for yourself, it is going to be more unlikely that those goals will be reached. It is best to start small, then work your way up. For example, if you rarely go to the gym, it wouldn’t be a good idea to set a goal to start going to the gym every day of the week. This could easily lead to burnout. Instead, you could set goal to start going to the gym three times per week. Get consistent with that, then increase your frequency.
3. Be time-bound
Set realistic timelines for your goals. Giving yourself a realistic timeline will help you better plan what is necessary in order to meet the specific goal. If you know you want to lose 10 pounds in 2 months, then you know you will have to lose 1-2 pounds per week. Knowing the time frame will help you put things into perspective. It will also help you stay motivated.
4. Grab an accountability partner
If you have a friend or loved one who has similar goals as you, it could be extremely helpful to have an accountability partner. Accountability partners exist to help keep you on track. It can be difficult to work towards a goal on your own, and it’s normal to lack motivation. Your accountability partner will be the person to remind you to keep going whenever you feel like giving up.
5. Be gracious
Be easy on yourself. There are going to be bumps along the way. Your journey to better health is going to be difficult sometimes. That is why graciousness is key. If you mess up, cheat on your diet, or miss a gym session, try not to beat yourself up about it. It will only make things worse. Instead, show yourself some extra love and get back on track when you are ready. It's a marathon, not a race.
