5 Healthier Food Swaps For Your Holiday Favorites

The holidays are here! And whether you're hosting or attending a party, it's easy to get caught up in the excitement and overeat. This can make it challenging to eat well and avoid weight gain.

Staying on track during the holidays

It's so easy to get caught up in the chaos and stress of the season that we forget how important it is to take care of ourselves. And when you do, you'll feel better physically and mentally. You'll have more energy and be more productive at work (or school), and you'll have more time for yourself and your family.

When food is on your mind, it can be difficult to focus on anything else. And when you're eating for comfort, you may reach for foods that are high in sugar and fat—even if they're not what your body really needs.

Simple food hacks to incorporate into your holiday meals

If you're looking for ways to stay on track this holiday season, you're in luck. Here are my top five holiday food swaps that will help keep you on track:

1. Swap high-fat dairy products like cream cheese or butter with lower-fat versions such as reduced-fat sour cream or light butter.

2. Swap high-calorie processed foods like stuffing or mashed potatoes with lower-calorie versions such as whole grains (like brown rice), sweet potatoes, or vegetables (like cauliflower).

3. Swap sweets like sugar cookies or candy with fruits that contain fiber like apples, pears or bananas.

4. Swap refined white breads and pastas made from refined flour with whole grains (such as whole wheat bread) and legumes.

5. Swap high-fat meats like turkey with leaner cuts of meat such as chicken or fish.

Remember: Everything in moderation

There's nothing wrong with enjoying your favorite holiday foods, just make sure to do it in moderation and balance it with plenty of healthy eating.

Many weight loss programs advertise rapid weight loss, but how do you know what's safe and what's not? Rapid weight loss could be detrimental to your health or counterproductive to your weight loss goals. There are many reasons you shouldn't try to shed pounds too quickly. When you lose weight too fast, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies and weight gain later on. Additionally, your body will start to store fat at an accelerated rate in response to the sudden drop in calories. That means that when you stop dieting, the pounds will return even faster than they went away! Being under the supervision of a trained weight loss doctor can ensure that you're losing at a healthy rate and being monitored during your weight loss journey every step of the way.

If you have arthritis, you may be concerned about your weight. Many people believe they can't lose weight if they have arthritis. This is not true! Arthritis inhibits some people from exercising due to pain and stiffness. Weight loss actually helps to reduce arthritis symptoms because as you lose weight, less strain is being put on your joints. Diet also plays a part. It's important to eat an anti-inflammatory diet to elevate discomfort associated with arthritis.

If you've been working out for several weeks and you're not losing weight, it's possible that you're gaining muscle instead of fat. When your body needs more calories than your diet provides, it turns to your fat stores for energy. The more energy your body needs to draw from the fat stores, the more weight you lose.

Weight gain and fatigue are common and go hand in hand. If you’re tired all the time, it can be hard to get motivated to exercise or eat healthier. It might not be a motivation issue, though. It might be your hormones and adrenal glands. A lot of people ask if they can lose weight without exercise, and the answer is yes. But there are some things to consider before you decide to do it.

There is no guarantee that you will lose weight and keep it off. If you are following a fad diet, the weight loss may be temporary. The fad diet will not address the cause of your weight gain and therefore you will likely regain the weight when you go back to eating what caused the weight gain in the first place.
