Yes, losing weight will lower your blood pressure, but you might have already known this simple answer. The real question is why does your weight increase or decrease your blood pressure?
There are four major ways to increases or decreases your blood pressure. Here's what you need to know if you are thinking of starting a diet, exercise, or weight loss routine.
Your heart doesn't have to work as hard if you lose weight. This is because it's easier for your heart to pump blood through your body when you're carrying around less weight. Less work for the heart equals lower blood pressure. Over time, losing just 10 pounds can shave about 5 points off your systolic blood pressure. You'll feel more energetic and less tired, too.
Exercise strengthens your heart so that it can beat more efficiently, which lowers your blood pressure. Exercise also helps to lower your cholesterol levels and improves circulation throughout the body. Exercise strengthens your heart muscle and improves how efficiently it works. It also helps prevent future health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes.
Alcohol. Alcohol raises blood pressure by causing the constriction of arteries — the same effect it has on veins. In addition, alcohol reduces the amount of potassium in the body, which causes muscles to contract more forcefully (and raise blood pressure). If you're hypertensive, limiting alcohol intake is one of the most important things you can do for yourself and others around you.
Sodium (salt). Sodium is another culprit when it comes to raising blood pressure through its effects on blood vessels. When sodium levels rise, your body retains water, which can increase blood volume and raise blood pressure.
The fight, flight, freeze response increases blood pressure because it causes muscle tension which raises blood flow to muscles and other organs. This increases their demand for oxygen which puts a strain on your heart and cardiovascular system as it struggles to cope with the higher demand for oxygen from your muscles. This is why you get an increased heart rate, faster breathing, and sweating when you're stressed out by something like an argument with someone close to you or watching a scary movie!
Concurring all these contributing factors at once can be difficult if not impossible. If you try going it alone without any accountability, you will be doomed to failure.
