Can I Lose Weight if I Have a Thyroid Issue?

That's a question I get asked all the time.

Hi there, I'm Dr. Ian Rainey, the founder of Zoomloss. And I want you to know that if you have a thyroid condition, you can absolutely lose weight.

The Misconception About Thyroid Issues

Many people think that just because they have a thyroid condition, that's the cause of why they can't lose weight. That's absolutely not true. They think that the thyroid causes them to gain weight. It causes them to be tired. It causes them to have brittle nails, fatigue, thinning in the eyebrows, brittle hair.

And that's not just the case. The thyroid actually is designed to protect you. It's almost like a barometer.

How The Thyroid Works - simple explanation

When the body doesn't have everything it needs, the thyroid goes, “Whoa! Hey! Time out here. We don't have everything we need to keep living healthy.. Let's slow down. Let's make you want to sleep a little bit more. Let's make you rest. Let's make your body repair. You can’t keep going around because you're going to blow a gasket.

A good example would be if I was in a race, and I'm in the Daytona 500, and I'm racing around the track. Let’s say that I’’m going 180 mph, and I'm about ready to blow my engine. That would be a big problem.  Or let’s say that my tire is about ready to explode or there is some other severe problem that needs to be addressed. That’s when the thyroid would say, whoa, Hey, let's slow down. Let's pull over and make a pit stop. Let's get everything fixed so the care can keep driving without crashing or blowing the engine.

Instead, as humans, we are stubborn.  We keep trying to “go, go, go” with caffeine, with coffee, with sugar, with stimulants.  What your body really needs is to rest, heal and repair.

What You Can Do If You Think You Have A Thyroid Problem

That’s where Zoomloss shines.  We discover the underlying causes of your symptoms such as weight gain, fatigue, anxiety, joint pain, stomach pain…. and yes….even your stubborn thyroid. We bring back the things your body needs to heal so the body has everything it needs and then the thyroid will go, “Oh, all right, we're good. Now you can go ahead and continue to function with that healthy, elite body you have. We’re not going to be sleepy. We're not going to start storing fat. We're going to start building more lean muscle and help you look and feel your best.

The thyroid plays a big part in weight loss, but it is not the cause, and it can be improved. The truth is, when we fix the underlying causes of thyroid issues, people lose weight.

What We've Seen Happen

In fact, I was just talking to a woman yesterday. She is one of my patients and she is about 400 miles away. And I've been working with her for over a year, a little bit here, a little bit there. She had hypothyroidism and was told there was nothing she could do to lose weight. She had tried “everything”, or at least that is what she told me. She was 230 pounds when she started working with me.  As of today, she has lost 109 pounds.

She went from 230 pounds down to 121. Her goal is 120, and she is only 1 pound away from her incredible goal.

She tried everything. She tried all these different programs. She tried all these different things to lose weight, nothing worked.

But once we started working together, she told me she had a thyroid problem. So I looked at her bloodwork and addressed the underlying issues. She needed to restore balance (homeostasis) to her body.

And then guess what?

She started losing weight. She lost a lot of weight. 110 pounds of weight. She's very happy. I’m very happy. She's a great example of  And having a thyroid condition can be something and having a thyroid problem does not mean the end of the world.

Holiday weight gain is a daunting thought for many people. From work parties to family gatherings, temptation is everywhere. It is easy to slip into old habits and put goals on the back burner. Holidays tend to encourage overeating and the consumption of high calorie foods. On average, adults in Western societies gain one pound between the months of November and January. This might not seem like much, but for some people, that can add up throughout the years. If left unaddressed, it can become harder to lose that weight. Nonetheless, it is 100% possible to stay on track during the holidays. Here are some tips to help support your health journey this holiday season.

Many weight loss programs advertise rapid weight loss, but how do you know what's safe and what's not? Rapid weight loss could be detrimental to your health or counterproductive to your weight loss goals. There are many reasons you shouldn't try to shed pounds too quickly. When you lose weight too fast, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies and weight gain later on. Additionally, your body will start to store fat at an accelerated rate in response to the sudden drop in calories. That means that when you stop dieting, the pounds will return even faster than they went away! Being under the supervision of a trained weight loss doctor can ensure that you're losing at a healthy rate and being monitored during your weight loss journey every step of the way.

If you have arthritis, you may be concerned about your weight. Many people believe they can't lose weight if they have arthritis. This is not true! Arthritis inhibits some people from exercising due to pain and stiffness. Weight loss actually helps to reduce arthritis symptoms because as you lose weight, less strain is being put on your joints. Diet also plays a part. It's important to eat an anti-inflammatory diet to elevate discomfort associated with arthritis.

If you've been working out for several weeks and you're not losing weight, it's possible that you're gaining muscle instead of fat. When your body needs more calories than your diet provides, it turns to your fat stores for energy. The more energy your body needs to draw from the fat stores, the more weight you lose.

Weight gain and fatigue are common and go hand in hand. If you’re tired all the time, it can be hard to get motivated to exercise or eat healthier. It might not be a motivation issue, though. It might be your hormones and adrenal glands. A lot of people ask if they can lose weight without exercise, and the answer is yes. But there are some things to consider before you decide to do it.
