CAN WEIGHT LOSS CAUSE HEADACHES?

YES! Weight loss can cause headaches, but you probably already realized that. What’s more important is understanding why and how to prevent weight loss headaches.

There are a few reasons why you might get a headache after you lose weight.

When you lose weight, your body begins to detoxify.

This can lead to a whole cascade of effects that can cause headaches. The body stores toxins in fat cells, which are released into the bloodstream when fat is burned. As the toxins begin to circulate through your body, you may experience headaches and other symptoms like nausea, dizziness and fatigue.

You can prevent detox headaches through hydration, nutritional supplements. However, the right supplements depend on your metabolic function and genetics. That is why it is important that rapid weight less be done under doctor supervision.

Weight loss can cause headaches when your body begins to undergo changes.

For example, as you lose weight, your blood pressure may drop.  If this happens, it will decrease the blood flow to the brain. This results in headaches or migraines for many people. This can be dangerous. Calorie intake needs to be adjusted and your lab results need to be reviewed to insure you are not putting your health at risk. Headaches may be an indicator of a bigger health issue. If you started a diet without consulting a physician and haven’t had blood work, it may be time to talk to your doctor or one of our specialists.

Weight loss can cause headaches when you fail to hydrate properly.

When you lose weight, especially at a rapid pace, you lose water weight as fat breaks down. If you do not drink enough water to keep up with the level of dehydration caused by your weight loss efforts, you will experience headaches since dehydration is one of the most common causes of headache pain.

Weight loss can cause headaches when your calorie intake changes rapidly.

Another possible reason for headaches or migraines after losing weight is that your body is adjusting to the change in your caloric intake. If your blood sugar drops, you may experience hypoglycemia, a condition of low blood sugar that is often accompanied by headaches, fatigue and irritability.  Sometimes this can even cause a person to lose consciousness. Again, this is another reason rapid weight loss should be done under the supervision of an experienced professional.

If you suffer from headaches as a result of your weight loss, this can quickly take the joy out of your efforts.  Don’t let that happen.

Holiday weight gain is a daunting thought for many people. From work parties to family gatherings, temptation is everywhere. It is easy to slip into old habits and put goals on the back burner. Holidays tend to encourage overeating and the consumption of high calorie foods. On average, adults in Western societies gain one pound between the months of November and January. This might not seem like much, but for some people, that can add up throughout the years. If left unaddressed, it can become harder to lose that weight. Nonetheless, it is 100% possible to stay on track during the holidays. Here are some tips to help support your health journey this holiday season.

Many weight loss programs advertise rapid weight loss, but how do you know what's safe and what's not? Rapid weight loss could be detrimental to your health or counterproductive to your weight loss goals. There are many reasons you shouldn't try to shed pounds too quickly. When you lose weight too fast, it can lead to nutrient deficiencies and weight gain later on. Additionally, your body will start to store fat at an accelerated rate in response to the sudden drop in calories. That means that when you stop dieting, the pounds will return even faster than they went away! Being under the supervision of a trained weight loss doctor can ensure that you're losing at a healthy rate and being monitored during your weight loss journey every step of the way.

If you have arthritis, you may be concerned about your weight. Many people believe they can't lose weight if they have arthritis. This is not true! Arthritis inhibits some people from exercising due to pain and stiffness. Weight loss actually helps to reduce arthritis symptoms because as you lose weight, less strain is being put on your joints. Diet also plays a part. It's important to eat an anti-inflammatory diet to elevate discomfort associated with arthritis.

If you've been working out for several weeks and you're not losing weight, it's possible that you're gaining muscle instead of fat. When your body needs more calories than your diet provides, it turns to your fat stores for energy. The more energy your body needs to draw from the fat stores, the more weight you lose.
